Mildred Lucille Rice Smith was born on February 2, 1931 to Floyd “Bud” and Leona Kauk Rice on the family farm east of Rhea, Oklahoma. She was raised on the family farm and attended Center Point and Rhea Schools until the eighth grade. She then attended Leedey High School until her graduation with the class of 1948.
Mildred met the love of her life, Arthur Cleo “Shorty” Smith and the two entered into marriage March 19, 1950 at the home of her parents in Rhea. The two made their home initially at Fort Bragg, North Carolina where Shorty was stationed with the Army. After Shorty retired from the Army in 1952 they returned to Oklahoma. The family lived in Cushing, Ardmore, Alva and Woodward during Shorty’s career in the Oil Industry. Throughout this time, Mildred was a homemaker as the couple was blessed with the birth of three sons, Larry Wayne, Michael Eugene and Danny Joe. In 1966 they moved the family and settled in Leedey, Oklahoma where the couple owned and operated a LP Gas Business. Mildred was the office manager and was instrumental in the success of the business. In May of 1976 they sold the business though Mildred continued to work as the office manager. Over the next few years she was employed by Leedey Drug and both grocery stores. After the death of Shorty in 1982 Mildred sold the family home and moved to Elk City. Mildred spent the next thirteen years living in Elk City and working for Wal-Mart in the fabric department until her retirement from the company. In 1996 she moved to Camargo where she worked at the Camargo Quick Stop primarily as a cook during the breakfast rush until 1999. Mildred continued to live at her home in Camargo until her death where she is now rejoicing in her heavenly home with the love of her life. Mildred was an excellent homemaker. Cooking for others was a gift and something that brought her great joy throughout life. Cinnamon rolls and hot bread were her specialties. Mildred had a passion for sewing, making countless quilts and pillows as well as most of her clothes. She also greatly enjoyed needlepoint and craft projects.
