“Now it happened, as Jesus sat at the table in the house, that behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat down with Him and his disciples.” Matt 9:10 The Gospel writers often go to great lengths to make a point. It is stated time and time again that Jesus frequently had an audience with tax collectors and sinners. For some reason the two were mentioned together quite often. It would make the serious student of the Bible wonder what the connection might be. It seems to be pretty obvious who the sinners were; those who were trapped in a lifestyle of sin, and maybe even those who had no apparent relationship with God would certainly fall into the category of a ‘sinner’. But why do the gospel writers throw the tax collectors into the same group?
