Part 71 It was asked not too long ago about the verse that John records by inspiration in 1 John 1:7: “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.” He asked, “According to 1 John 1:7, if I walk in the light, the blood of Jesus cleanses me from all sin. Would you explain what it means to ‘walk in the light’?” As with any study of God’s Word, we must first put the verse in context to the passage. “This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us” (1 John 1:5-8). John has written to those who need to better understand the fellowship of the Father (vs. 3). John declares what he has witnessed in his time with Christ to teach and to help the readers to understand what is required for the fellowship of God.
