Gary Scott was born November 19, 1943 in Cheyenne, Oklahoma to Bertha Mae and George Loyd Scott. He passed away April 4, 2017 at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at the age of 73 years, 4 months and 15 days.
Gary became a Christian in 2005 and attended the church of Christ in Cheyenne, Oklahoma. Gary grew up northeast of Cheyenne on the family farm near Dead Indian Creek. He attended school at Cheyenne where he graduated in 1962. Gary started dating Jeanette Wesner when he was in the 9th grade and she was in 8th grade and they were each other’s only boyfriend and girlfriend. They were married at Cheyenne, Oklahoma on September 1, 1963. They then moved to California for a short time before returning to live in Cheyenne for a couple of years, finally moving northeast of town in 1967 on the family farm to make their home. He worked for the ASCS and then for Dobson Telephone for a few years before deciding to work for himself. Gary and Jeanette ran a dairy, farmed wheat and ran stocker calves for 8 years before deciding to try something new. Since Gary had been a lifetime coyote hunter with his dad and uncle and had a history with dogs, he decided to start raising racing greyhounds. He continued this until his death. Gary, with the help of Jeanette and their family was very successful. During this time, they raised or trained several All-Americans, 2 National Greyhounds of the Year, 2 national yearly win leaders, several track record holders and one world record holder for the fastest time ever. During all this, he found the time to run a cow/ calf operation as well as farm wheat and grass.
Gary was a big supporter of 4-H and FFA. He enjoyed working with youth in the livestock industry, raising and selling show pigs to them for their projects. He was very instrumental in helping the local livestock shows by being a member of the county fair board.
He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching the Cheyenne teams play, especially when Justin or Jacie was playing. If our teams were playing, you could almost always see him in the stands supporting them. When the local teams weren’t playing, he loved watching the Oklahoma Sooners, Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers or any of the many golf tournaments on tv.
Gary & Jeanette enjoyed playing golf together and played in couple’s scramble tournaments throughout Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle. He enjoyed building golf clubs and most of his family played with sets that he had put together for them. Many family and friends will remember playing rounds of golf with Gary on just about every course in western Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle.
He is preceded in death by his parents, a son, Randy Jay Scott, 3 brothers, George, Bob and Harold Scott and a sister, Billie Vincent. He is survived by his wife, Jeanette, of the home; his children, Joey Scott and Brenda Scott, both of Cheyenne, OK; 2 grandchildren, Justin and Jacie Scott, 2 sisters, Betty Lamb and husband, Stanley, of Sayre, OK and Lonna Long, Hacienda Heights, CA; and a host of other relatives and friends.
