Matthew 27:51-53 says, at that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split. The tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs, and after Jesus’ resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many people. The curtain in the temple separated the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place. The High Priest could only enter the Most Holy Place at a certain time every year. The curtain tearing symbolizing the access to God for those who believe in Jesus – Jesus’s death on the cross – that final, perfect sacrifice that defeated death, hell, and the grave. With the resurrection of Jesus – the promise of eternal life.
